Building your brand through reputation

Building your brand through reputation

Building your brand through reputation

Do you know what other people think of you, or what your real value is?

 Have you Googled yourself?

Do you know what kind of presence you have on the Internet?

Your online and offline presence mean everything in terms of your success today, and it is important that you develop and manage your personal brand. Reputation and relationships are coming to define the way all investment and financial decisions occur in our hyper-connected world. Your online and offline networks, the clarity you have about who you are and what you have to offer, your behavior and impact with others in all aspects of your life, add up to your social capital, power and influence.

Whether you're looking for a new position, starting a business or trying to position your company and/or yourself as a player worth some consideration in the shifting economy of today; self-awareness and development are required for an effective marketing strategy.

Because of the multitude of choices that the Internet provides for employers and consumers, reputation management, clarity and trust are the advantage. Maya Rodale of The Huffington Post interviewed one of the leading thinkers on the way the Internet is changing the economy. Josh Klein, author of ''Reputation Economics: Why Who You Know is Worth More than What You Have,'' explains that traditional financial institutions are giving way to networks based on trust and relationships, that is, reputation economics.

It's no big leap to understand that consumers have trouble trusting corporations and institutions. The key is to understand how you fit into this new model, and how you can thrive within it. Klein advises that you invest in relationships; provide real value to others; and seek win-win situations that build worth for both you and others.

So what's your personal brand? And how are you making it known?

Career Tips

• Work to clarify who you are as well as what you have to offer
• Align your online and offline existence, ensure consistency
• Understand how you fit into the reputation economics scene

Self development and growth into leadership

Self development and growth into leadership

Quality depends on your perceptions, how you deal with failures and strive to achieve.

Today’s businesses require more and more leaders, and it is not easy task finding leaders- many may want to lead but not all can lead. The fact of the matter is that leadership is a quality that one is not born into but is developed. It depends on your perceptions, how you deal with failures and how you strive for achievements.

The human mind is extremely powerful but sadly, this secret is not revealed to us for numerous reasons. What makes each person unique depends on the way one has been exposed to the world, including one’s family, friends and relatives; the environment; social and economic circumstances; and ideology/belief system you grew up with all contribute to influence your mind and body to react in a certain way, and you get used to it. But it is not difficult to break this pattern and become a leader.

As the famous author Robin Sharma puts it: lead without title.

The first thing you can do is inculcate in yourself a belief system which says “ I can achieve it” and then prepare others around you – your staff, your colleagues or even managers to believe in this and gradually build up a collective consciousness of winning.

Once the mind is set – now called a winning mind, you have essentially become a leader in the making without a title. But there will be challenges on your way to achieving what you want or your desired corporate goal. And although it may seem impossible to achieve the beginning, it is easy.

A research made on great minds like that of Gandhi, Mandela, Lincoln, Einstein, etc. show they had one thing in common - they all had a questioning in mind. They questioned themselves when they faced failure instead of brooding: why did it happen? Working at the root cause of a problem and eradicating it; asking how success can be achieved; what the plan is, and arriving at procedure are valid points to consider.

Once you rise above the petty politics, learn to lead and study the lives of these extraordinary persons and you will discover each of them started with a failure or an unhappy situation in life, but they either fought the situation or learned from it. So you can too.

Career Tips:

·       The formation of personality is influenced by the environment.

·       Inculcate in yourself the belief that you can achieve anything.

·       Emulate the lives of extraordinary leaders; learn from mistakes.

Studying hard towards a PHD

Studying hard towards a PHD

One can choose from a variety of PhD courses in different subjects.

A PhD is arguably the highest in the hierarchy of qualifications one can attain. People who commonly study for a PhD include those working in academics like teachers or professors. A PhD can add value to corporate who are mid-career and aim towards a better or different job profile.

Whatever your subject of choice is, your dissertation has to add value into the existing knowledge pool that is available on the topic. It has to be innovative and ably supported by primary data (collected via questionnaires, surveys, colds calls) and secondary data (information available in journals/the Internet/other sources). Your research must present some radical views and reflect your own understanding of the subject.

It is recommended that you choose a subject close to your heart. It helps if the subject is part of the industry you work in or what you teach as your PhD will involve a lot of exploring and probing into. It is useful to have a platform to base your studies on so that it will be easier to do your research.

Getting a PhD involves having a postgraduate degree and years of work experience. Different universities have different requirements. You need to submit an application which includes a detailed explanation about your subject, why you have chosen it and how you intend to go about your research.

The United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) launched its PhD program in 2009. A Doctorate in Business Administration is offered by Abu Dhabi University (ADU) and the University of Wollongong.

The Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi also offers a PhD in Engineering.

Education Tips

Entrepreneurs thrive and succeed

Entrepreneurs thrive and succeed.

In today’s competitive job market it’s survival of the fittest.

When did you last learn something new, or take a risk at work? Doing your job well today may not be enough to secure your long-term employability, however hard you may work. According to Paul Brown, writing for forbes magazine, everyone will have to become an ‘’entrepreneur’’ of sorts. Even if you don’t ever start  a business, even if you don’t know what P&L and ROI stand for , if you want to work well into the future, you need to start seeing yourself differently.

For most of us, the future will involve a number of jobs and even career changes as a matter of survival. And just like Darwin’s theory of evolution, it’s survival of the fittest. In a world where contract work and part-time work have become prevalent, those with an entrepreneurial attitude will thrive. Anyone following the outdated set of rules that say,’’   Qualifications will get you a good job,’’ will struggle. What does ‘’being entrepreneurial mean?

Developing a greater awareness of your skills and strengths knowing what makes you unique and how you stand out

Being willing to take risks – experimenting with career possibilities and capitalizing on interests that could earn money.

Looking outside your everyday experience to identify opportunities that could be relevant to your future or to your friends, family or others in your network.

After self-assessment, you may realize you already have this attitude, or may need to transition into it to future-proof yourself.

Career Tips

Develop a greater awareness of your skills and strengths

Identify opportunities that could be relevant to your future

Experiment with career possibilities& capitalize on interests
